Do you understand moon wisdom?

“Our great symbol for the Goddess is the moon, whose three aspects reflect the three stages in women’s lives and whose cycles of waxing and waning coincide with women’s menstrual cycles.” Author: Carol P. Christ

 Womb Wisdom

Traditionally the female cycle is known as the “moon cycle” because:

The menstrual cycle follows the lunar cycle – between 28 – 31 days

Menstruation generally occurs at a new moon

It has a sway over libido and sex

Conception generally occurs around the full moon

So what if I told you the moon was influencing your fertility?

Moon wisdomIt is well established that the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the moon, the sun and the rotation of the Earth influence  water. We all seem to understand and accept that the moon affects tidal water, stimulates mating and birthing in the animal kingdom and instigates change of seasons but as we (that’s humans), contain 70-80% water  (all depends on how hydrated you are and your age) we too must be influenced by lunar energy. Many of you understand your  menstrual cycle, its complexities and hormones but how many of you connect your cycle with moon/lunar energy?  Just to recap there are four phases of the menstrual cycle  – menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase.   For those of you who like facts, during the 1950’s a Czech doctor called Dr Eugene Jonas noted that a women’s fertility peaked during the moon’s cycle.  He developed a fertility method around his findings which my blog on full moon and fertility  discussed. However, today, I offer an easy explanation of the menstrual cycle using Creation Fertility Guidance Cards  to explain how the lunar/moon energy can affect your fertility journey.  I hope this helps you consciously connect with it to support your dream of starting  a family . Within my clinic I am fascinated by the moon’s influence and am starting an interesting research project as to whether assisted conception procedures can be influenced by lunar/moon rhythms.

Through my passion for fertility, western science and yogic alchemy I have developed a fertility toolkit which integrates moon rhythmns – see more below

New Moon WisdomNew moon

If you have used the contraceptive pill for a long period of time, your moon time bleed may not naturally fall with lunar energy for a while ……but rest assured most women find their “menses” adapt and eventually connect.  The new moon is the beginning  of a “new cycle” –  it is during the  days leading up to & over the new moon that either a positive pregnancy is confirmed or menstruation begins.

As the hormone progesterone plunges, it causes the uterine lining to shred,  and day one of your menses arrives.   Within my clinic I hope to see that my clients menstruation lasts a minimum of 4 days – but up to 6 days is good. During this time your energy may be low or if you have been trying to conceive  and the bleed arrives you may be feeling frustrated or low.  This is a time to nurture, cleanse and release.  Choose seasonal  foods and juices to support your energy, balance blood sugar and replenish iron. Emotionally it is time for stillness, love and surrounding yourself with positive people.  Take time to rest & honour your emotions.  This is a wonderful time for ritual – maybe an Abundance New Moon Ritual to trust in the future or use meditation to  connect with your future baby, knowing that you will conceive when the time is right. The moon also affects birth – did you know that less babies are born over the three-day period at the new moon?

You may be interested to hear that I have found (within my clinic) that women who have suffered miscarriages, terminations or  completed assisted conception procedures (failed or positive) or who have a history of recent contraceptive pill or Clomid  use have altered moon/womb cycles. These women tend to ovulate aound the new moon and menstruate around the full moon. Over a period of time their cycles change towards new moon menstruation but it often takes a few months and conceptions have taken place despite the change of lunar rhythm.  I wonder whether this is one of the reasons why the second menstruation after failed assisted conception or miscarriage is often absent or irregular!

“A study in the Journal of Neuroscience tested pain sensitivity in women at different times during their menstrual cycle—first during their period when estradiol is at its lowest and then when their estradiol levels were at their highest. The women in the study were subjected to a controlled amount of pain and asked to rate the level of their discomfort. At low levels of estradiol, the women reported feeling much more pain than when the hormone was at its highest. The implication is that when your estrogen levels are low, such as during menopause or during the premenstrual or menstrual phase of your cycle, you are likely to feel pain more acutely, which is also likely true for emotional pain. Just one more reason a smart man is especially sensitive at this time!” Author: Daniel G. Amen

The waxing moonAs the moon waxes (new moon to full moon)

oestrogen levels increase just as menstruation ends.  This is the follicular phase because your pituitary gland releases a hormone called Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which stimulates the follicles in your ovaries to mature. Oestrogen and testosterone start to rise during this time.  This is a high energy period for you, a great time for fertility exercise, bringing a boost of energy  and positivity whilst naturopathy and signature therapies balance your hormones, support and improve your mood. As this phase continues testosterone begins to stimulate your libido whilst oestrogen makes you feel confident and balanced. This is the time to track your ovulation symptoms .

“It is every woman’s responsibility to take the time when she is in her time of the moon to purify. It is the responsibility of the men to give the women the opportunity to do so. Nicholas Noble Wolf,”

Conception at Full MoonFull moon

Oestrogen and testesterone rise to peak levels and ovulation is the culmination of all the hard work your body has been doing over the last couple of weeks.  Oh boy, your sex drive should be at it’s height!.  Hopefully  work is not getting in the way because this is a time of high energy and  opportunity. Feeling receptive to baby making ovulation is likely to be  around 48 hours either side of th full moon or if you are totally in it’s rhythm at the full moon.  Ensure you spend time with your loved one.  This is also the time to receive signature fertility therapies such as reflexology & abdominal massage to  keep you grounded & encourage ovulation (particularly if you suffer with polycystic ovaries).  When your egg releases from its follicle it can survive for 12-24 hours  so use abdominal sacral massage to oxygenate the womb, reproductive organs and sacral chakra.  For those of you who may be pregnant and nearing their birth date statistics prove that more babies are born around the full moon so I advise you to hae some maternity reflexology over this time!

The waning moonDuring the waning moon (full moon to new moon)

The first 2-3 days of this phase will feel a lot like the ovulatory phase but soon progesterone levels increase encouraging your womb to develop a healthy layer of nourishing and nurturing endometrium for your fertilised egg to rest in.  I liken this to a duvet – encouraging the fertilisation to snuggle down and get comfy. This is the time to remain positive, a good time for nesting and gentle exercise like yoga.  The second half of this phase is notoriously difficult for many women, you may feel distracted, wish to comfort eat or suffer with  anxiety and moodiness during the  2 week wait .  During this phase  Reiki and energy healing feels  wonderful together with womb meditation, listen to one below.
